Bruce Hungerford Collection

1880-1986

Correspondence, sound recordings and transcripts, scrapbooks, pencil and ink sketches, and articles. Correspondence, ca. 950 items, comprises the bulk of the collection. Principal correspondents include members of Hungerford's family, personal friends Thomas and Sylvia Lipton, and Myra Hess. Sound recordings include Hungerford's Vanguard recordings, as well as other analog discs, tape reels, and acetate discs of his performances. Also present are ca. twenty hours of sound tape reels, some with transcripts, of scholarship lessons with Carl Friedberg. Correspondence, scrapbooks, and sketches include materials pertaining both to Hungerford's music career and to his work in paleontology and Egyptology.

Pianist. Born in 1922 in Korumburra, Victoria, Australia, Bruce Hungerford studied in Sydney with Ignaz Friedman and in the U.S. with Ernest Hutcheson and Olga Samaroff. He was a student and friend of Myra Hess, who introduced him to Carl Friedberg. In 1950, Hungerford won the first annual Carl Friedberg Alumni Association Scholarship, through which he had twenty-five lessons with Friedberg.
